Tips for Speech and Language Development at home:

  • Read, read, read!!  The more you read with your child, the more language and vocabulary they will learn.
  • Talk with your child about all of the things you do together!  Discuss what you're doing and why.  Describe the items and toys you use and why you use them.  Talk about what you see when you're driving (point out items in your surroundings, like livestock, road signs, familiar places).
  • Make eye contact with your child when talking to him or her, and encourage your child to do the same.
  • Practice following directions.  Give your child a direction (something you want them to do or something fun, like touch your toes, jump 2 times, or place your hand on your head) and make sure that he or she is able to follow it.
  • Involve your child in daily routines and activities in and around your home (making dinner, playing a game together, bedtime rituals).
  • Model clear speech.  If you notice your child is saying a sound or a word the wrong way, show them the right way!
